E-MailAs part of the "DIGIPAT" project, the pathology department at the University Hospital in Dresden will take the first steps towards digitalisation by the end of 2025. In collaboration with Carus Consilium Sachsen GmbH, the Institute of Pathology, which is the central institution for the diagnosis of cancer and other diseases in the German state of Saxony, will automate initial processes in histopathological routines and thus further improve the quality of diagnostics.
This groundbreaking digitisation project will optimise primary care in cancer diagnostics as well as in other medical areas across Saxony. The aim is to address the challenges of the 21st century, such as an ageing population and the associated increase of cancer cases, while ensuring long-term sustainability. Without these first steps towards digitalisation, histopathological analysis in Saxony would no longer meet the standards of industrialised nations.
The aim of this innovative project is to establish the foundations for digitalisation so that it can be firmly integrated into routine pathology processes in the future. "This approach not only ensures the long-term and optimal functioning of pathology, but also responds to the shortage of specialists and staff. It will enhance the quality of pathological diagnostics and also pave the way for the use of artificial intelligence in cancer analysis.“ emphasises Dr. Falk Zakrzewski from the Institute of Pathology at the Carl Gustav Carus University Hospital.
The benefits of DIGIPAT are numerous and range from ensuring basic medical care for the population of Saxony to managing the growing number of cases in cancer diagnostics. An ageing population and the increasing demands on analysis methods in the context of personalised medicine make digitisation indispensable. The project therefore represents a significant contribution to the further development of medical care in Saxony, marking a step into the future and an investment in the health of our population.
The project was approved by Sächsische Aufbaubank - Förderbank (SAB) on 27 November 2023 and will be active until 31 December 2025.
