In the future, digitalization in the care of cleft lip and palate should optimize treatment planning and effectively improve networking of the caregivers in the in-patient and out-patient area of which mainly children will profit.
Therapy of new-borns and children with malformations in the area of the mouth, jaw or palate (e.g. cleft lip and palate), currently is mainly planned and carried out using analogue methods. In the course of orthodontic treatment these patients accumulate a number of gypsum models, photographs and especially x-ray photographs (CT or classical x-ray), including the associated radiation exposure. Both create an enormous and lasting burden for children.
The current communication between experts in the orthodontic care is done via postal mail or email. So, also the preparation of expert opinions is only possible by sending the gypsum models and printouts of the diagnostic documents, since there are no set electronic standards yet. This inefficient, error-prone and lengthy process prevents fast communication exchange between colleagues and the inclusion of external partners within the council.
Furthermore, when using the traditional shipping method it is possible that current data protection regulations are violated if patient documents get lost or are opened wrongly by third persons. These problems contribute to unnecessary delays and waiting times for patients.
